OUR FOUNDERS

MO•MI•MEI was founded by three friends who share a love of delicious Chinese street food, fresh Californian produce, and eye-catching design.

Stuart is a South African creative and designer extraordinaire. He is a dedicated family man & community leader.

Sumter is the founder of Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee. A true Southern gentleman, he activates dreams and embodies hospitality. As a savvy entrepreneur, Sumter also has an extraordinary eye for pop culture & design.

Jo is a Chinese-American scientist, artist, and chef. Her spirit animal is a Pomeranian named ‘Kitty’ and she dreams/works in vivid colors, scents, tastes, and textures.

OUR STORY

Our team makes magic! Sumter and his wife Chi-Lin came up with the idea of a Chinese restaurant where the food was both fresh and delicious - a place where you left feeling great!

They called their friend Jo - a culinary artist who creates dishes inspired by her Chinese roots while celebrating California's produce. Realizing that they had something special and were ready to build a brand - they invited Stu to join in this creative adventure.

Together they dreamed up MO•MI•MEI - a Cantonese street food concept specializing in ‘Gua Cheung Fun’ - steamed rice rolls.

Our founders are driven by a passion for building community and creating love-driven hospitality experiences.

This is the kind of food they want to eat. This is the kind of food they want to share with you.

MMM! ... LUCKY YOU!!
HAVE A YUMMMY DAY!!!

OUR FOOD

Our chef, Jo Situ Allen, was inspired by memories of growing up in Kaiping, China (Pearl River Delta) where she savored steamed rice rolls with her parents daily.

She loved the perfect texture of a delicate, yet toothsome noodle made from freshly milled rice milk, filled with a simple combination of shrimp and chives.

Always drizzled with soy sauce.

Her family immigrated to the US in the 80’s. Growing up in Chinatown and then spending time all over Los Angeles, she constantly searched for the flavors that brought her back to her roots.

Along the way, she started cooking with finds from her local farmer’s markets - the snap of crisp romaine, the juicy burst of sun-ripened tangerines, the scent of garlic - fresh from the earth... Bringing together all the tastes that she loved, she started re-creating nostalgic dishes with the freshest ingredients she could find.

As a California bohemian, Jo approaches Cantonese street food with a twist - making magic with beloved local flavors - while  inspired by the ancient philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine that she grew up with.
